The "Winward Side" or "Au Vent" as it was called by the French settlers, is the most rugged terrain of Dominica. Its windswept shoreline of black volcanic beaches lie desserted beneath the iron cliffs, lashed by powerfull waves rolling all the way from Africa and across the Atlantic to our shores. The heavy swells and powerful waves make it too dangerous for bathing,so this activity is prohibited by the local authorities.
The landscape is defiant, stunning and simply awesome with volcanic bluffs jutting out like guardian lions, and the foliage like windblown manes swept back by the constant force of the easterly trade winds.
The people of the east coast take deep pride in their agriculture and the area is littered with an abundance of agricultural crops including exotic fruits and spices.
The route takes you from the Emerald Pool junction down into the old abandoned Rosalie Estate, now part home of Dominica's newest resort, the Rosalie Resort. Driving through the farming communities, past banana plantations and small farms, this trip takes you across the mountains and into the village of Pointe Mulatre for a refreshing swin in the "White River" ( which flows from the Victoria Waterfalls) just on the outskirts of the Jungle Bay Resort.
